Who do we consider worthy of the title "hero"? Artist and art educator Donna F. St. John explores this provocative question in her assemblage exhibition, which highlights nine men and women, from around the globe, who have been called heroes.

What characteristics do we require of someone in order to regard them as a champion? St. John’s artwork investigates the duality of authentic versus simulated honor and heroism. She asks the viewer to consider whether we truly honor the people who have made extraordinary contributions in our society.

Some of the “heroes” in St. John’s exhibition have been internationally recognized and some are unknown to the average American. None of the individuals are without flaws; they are each blemished with doubts, imperfections, frustrations, and the very same human qualities that are balanced within our own lives. Yet each individual was capable of seeing beyond his or her personal existence and strove to improve the human condition. As our world continues to blur the lines between simulated and authentic realities, St. John poses questions about the value and perceptions of honor and heroism in our contemporary society, as we struggle to cultivate social justice and recognize interconnectivity.

St. John’s works will be on display in the gallery for five weeks after which time she will remove half of her assemblage tributes to make room for student‐created pieces. After working with St. John, high school art students from Saugatuck, Hamilton, and Holland Christian will create assemblages based on their own "heroes" or social justice issues searching for champions to elevate awareness. These works will be on display, alongside St. John’s, through January 14, 2017.
